I got my line edits back for Her Brother’s Keeper and I'm so excited. I’m one step closer to the book being published. If I’m being honest, I’m still not feeling very confident in the words. It’s only the second book I’ve written and it’s like the words aren’t getting on the paper the way I see the story in my head. If that makes sense. I had this dream, this goal, to write a story that does two things.
1. Expands the historical fiction romance genre for Black Americans.
2. Gives my ancestors the happy endings they deserve.
Before I wrote this novel, I felt like every time we heard about Greenwood, the riot and destruction was all we heard about. Very little time was spent on the people that lived there, the businesses they ran or the lives they lived. This story (and subsequent ones) are wholeheartedly fiction, but I wanted to add a story that focused on love. The love between families, lovers and community. I know at some point, critics will come in and give feedback about what I’ve created. Some of the feedback will be honest and spot on, while others will just be hating. There is a lot I’m missing. I’m not a historian. I’m a baby writer. My hope is the story will be loved and understood for what it is. A made up love story offered up as tribute. For now, it’s time to work on the thousands of edits suggested, to make the story better. I hope you love it.
