Books I Loved: The Monsters We Defy By Leslye Penelope

This book is nothing short of 5 stars!! L Penelope may have just turned me into a fantasy reader, LOL. I picked up this book for several reasons:

  • The story centers around a black psychic.

  • It's set in Washington DC in the 1920s.

  • The cover was beautiful.

The Monsters We Defy follows a woman who fights to get her freedom from a debt owed to a powerful spirit. There's a war happening in the spirit world that spills out into the human world, and Clara, the main character, assembles a group of unlikely people to help fight for good.

I'm not explaining it very well. Hehe. I don't want to give away anything. This novel contains romance, friendship, and community. It's not scary, nor is it too "woowoo". Clara is just a girl with the ability to see to the "other side" and talk with her deceased grandmother. The cast of characters was so full and lively and really made the novel extraordinary. The history and details of DC in the 20s was so rich and colorful.

L. Penelope writes beautifully and I enjoyed the story so much that I wasn't ready for it to end. I literally read AND audio-booked the story.

I would recommend this novel to the person who loves historical story. Someone who likes an energetic story and a fantastical fight of good vs evil.
